The first bariatric surgery ever preformed
According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Mortimer M. Bleshman performed the first bariatric surgery around 1960, it was an open R&Y Gastric Bypass. We had a lot less information and medical technology has evolved exponentially since then. Having an open procedure required a patient to spend long periods of time at the hospital and required a stiff and slow recovery obesity was already a problem and ever since then it was known that conditions like type 2 diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, high blood pressure and sleep apnea where the result of being overweight. Dr. Bleshman went on to be one of the founders of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (now known as ASMBS). Dr. Sandy Martinez is a proud member of the ASMBS.
